We will be featuring 2 speakers, Dr. Jeremy Black and Dr. Jeffrey Engel. This year’s theme is New World Orders: 1815 and 1945.

Napoleon’s defeat in 1815 and the collapse of his French-dominated system led to a fundamental reorganization of the international system at the Congress of Vienna and afterward. A desire to weaken and humble France had to be balanced against the need to keep France alive and strong as a check on rising powers like Russia, Prussia and Britain. Hitler’s defeat and the collapse of imperial Japan in 1945 also led to the search for a new world order, this time enlivened by the clash of American and Soviet ideology, nuclear weapons and a fever of decolonization in the developing world. How statesmen terminated the world wars and laid the groundwork for enduring peace despite their profound differences is a fascinating story on the 200th anniversary of 1815 and the 70th anniversary of 1945. Jeremy Black, an internationally recognized authority on diplomatic and military history, author of more than 110 books, will tease out the lessons of 1815. Jeffrey Engel, Director of the SMU Center for Presidential History and author of several books on Cold War history, will describe the dilemmas and solutions of 1945, and their long-term impact on the international system.
